The Journey Begins
Tuesday, August 5, 1997

Hi, everyone.

This is our first broadcast e-mail, so here's hoping it works as planned.

Make sure to let us know if your e-mail address changes so that we can update our list.

First of all, we want to tell you all how much we appreciated all of you who wished us well with your presence, phone calls, e-mail and gifts. We didn't get to visit nearly enough with everyone, and for that we apologize. We will remember your send off throughout our trip.

We left Harbor Island yesterday, August 4, 1997, at 5:50 am to catch the tide. We just made the Spokane Street Bridge opening before the rush hour closure from 6 to 9. It was calm and sunny, so we had to motor all the way. The autopilot, which had given us so much grief trying to get it to work, performed flawlessly and drove us automatically from waypoint to waypoint. It is integrated with the GPS, the instruments and the Radar, and they all work together very well.

With the currents in our favor, we were going 10 knots for a short time. When we got to Dungeness Spit, the wind came up on our nose and the current turned against us, so we made only 4 to 5 knots from there into Port Angeles. We tied up at the city dock at 3:40 pm, so it took us less that 10 hours from Harbor Island.

We will stay here in Port Angeles at least until tomorrow. Our friends John, Amy and their children live here and they will come down this evening to join us for dinner on the boat. Our plan is to fill up with fuel and go to Neah Bay tomorrow. We hear that there might be a weak low pressure system developing off the coast which would bring southerly winds. If that happens, we will wait in Neah Bay until it passes and the northerly winds return. Another complication is that Colin's back is acting up and we definitely will not go until he is functional again. Let's hope that the back and the winds are favorable at the same time!

Patricia is off to the Post Office with some snail mail, so she didn't get to contribute to this. Now all that remains is to talk someone out of a telephone jack and this can be on its way.

Thinking of you all. Keep us posted of events at your end.
